Every audience leaves a footprint. Great OOH plans know how to follow it.

Out-of-home (OOH) has always been about reaching the right people, at the right time, in the right place. But identifying those locations has often relied on historical planning patterns, familiar environments or educated assumptions.

The challenge is that audiences do not always concentrate where planners expect. Looking beyond the most obvious environments can reveal new opportunities to reach them.

Planning around assumptions

Many planning decisions start with what feels logical. Broad reach? Billboards. Luxury shoppers? High-end retail. College students? Universities. Sports fans? Stadiums. Those choices make sense, but they may only tell part of the story.

The examples below illustrate opportunities to reach an audience outside of the environments we expect them to be:

Audience Expected Less obvious
Frequent travelers Airports Liquor stores
Fitness enthusiasts Gyms Apartment buildings
Frequent shoppers Malls Taxi & rideshare TV
High household income Banks Gas stations

Planning with your audience, not around it

No two audiences move through the physical world in exactly the same way. Those patterns can also vary by market, season and lifestyle. A pet lover in Colorado during winter will have a different routine than a pet owner in South Florida.

That’s why choosing environments based solely on intuition, historical planning patterns or education assumptions can leave opportunities on the table. Understanding where audiences naturally concentrate within your campaign’s geographic parameters gives you another planning signal to consider before budgets are allocated.

Bringing audience concentration into planning

Audience insights advances Vistar’s planning capabilities by bringing deeper audience understanding directly into the DSP. As Vistar’s native intelligence layer, it helps buyers discover, prioritize and activate the inventory most likely to reach their audiences. Launching first with venue index scores, it measures audience concentration across venue types to rank environments, giving buyers greater confidence in every planning decision and uncovering unexpected environments.

Every eligible venue is evaluated based on how strongly a selected audience is represented compared to the general population, using observed device activity around that venue over time. Those venue level scores are then rolled up to venue types, making it easy to compare environments and understand where an audience is most concentrated.

Venue index scores are clearly stated and immediately actionable: a venue scoring over 100 means that audience over-indexes in that environment compared to another. Check out a tour of audience insights now.

A smarter way to choose the right places

The best media plans have always started with understanding the audience. Audience targeting helps define who you want to reach. Audience insights help reveal where your audience is most likely to be.

Because everyone leaves a footprint. Now you can use it to inform and strengthen planning decisions. Ready to get started? Let's talk.
